Just take a look at what the Mop Top Shop Campers did in Session I, Photoshop as well as (Sean Coleman, World-wide Car Designer, Lunch at The Carolina Club in Chapel Hill); Session II, Silkscreening; Session III (Dreamweaver) and Fitness, Session IV, (Animation), Fitness; Session V, Let's Build! (Computers, Robots, and Create With Kinex), and Session VI (Crime Scene Investigation).

        Putting it all together in the "Let's Build A Computer" session

Mop Top Summer Campers learn and explore the latest computer-related technologies and software applications. Using hands-on learning activities, students will build a computer that really works; learn the basics of web page design and publishing to design their own web pages incorporating sound and video; create basic animations and cartoons, illustrate and create artwork that they silkscreen on t-shirts. But that's not all, students become real crime scene investigators and use hands-on activities to understand forensics. To stay fit, CeCe, a personal trainer with Raleigh Personal Training, will provide fun and excitement while teaching students about nutrition, wellness, fitness, and the benefits of exercise. As an added treat, Mop Top Campers will participate in the 2010 Omega Psi Phi Conclave Parade on July 24, 2010 in Raleigh, NC.

Mop Top Campers learn basic HTML, a text editor used to design and create web sites; Adobe Dreamweaver, a graphic editor for web page creation; Adobe Photoshop, an application used by professionals for photo-editing and design; Adobe Flash, for basic animation and Adobe Premiere for video editing. All sessions are presented by professionals and instructors from nearby colleges and universities.

A special treat for all the kids will be a visit from NC State Graduate student, Sean Coleman, World-wide Contest Winner of the 2010 Shell Eco-Marathon: Autodesk Real World Challenge. Mr. Coleman designed an eco-friendly urban concept car that was actually built. At the End-of-Camp Finale, each student will present a final project that incorporates all that they learned during the Mop Top Shop Summer Science & Technology Camp. (See 2009 Summer Camp Projects). Click on the thumbnails to view the Flash animations.

Skills & Technology Tools introduced during the sessions include but are not limited to:

• how to build a basic computer
• use of digitizing tablets for drawing and illustrating
• use of digital cameras using Photoshop
• use of scanners
• incorporating graphics, video, and music/sound
• creating links to external and internal web pages
• rollovers
• optimizing images for the web
• silkscreeing and much, much, more....

Objectives of the Mop Top Shop Summer Camp:

• The mission of the Mop Top Shop Summer Science & Technology Camp is to expose and increase student awareness and enthusiasm for learning with science, technology, and technology tools using hands-on-learning activities.
• Provide multi-sensory stimulation for learning through the use of technology and technology tools
• Provide multicultural experiences and academic enrichment activities
• Introduce and expose students to the contributions of scientists and inventors
• Promote, build, and re-enforce self-confidence and self-esteem
• Promote healthy eating, nutrition, and fitness for both mind and body

Students participate in discussions and receive one-on-one feedback as well as friendly and constructive critiques as they learn by sharing and evaluating their work with instructors and fellow campers. Mop Top Campers should bring all of their wonderful ideas, artwork, photographs, creativity and imagination to this exciting camp. Healthy snacks will be provided each day. At the End-of-Camp Finale, parents, families, and friends are all invited to the Mop Top Shop Awards Presentation where campers showcase and share their final web site presentations. "Mop Top" the "Hip Hop" Scientist mascot and special guests are scheduled for the Final Awards Presentation.
