It's all downSTREAM with Mop Top STEAM for 2021! Our new theme for Summer 2021 is STREAM...Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, and Math (STREAM). Mop Top Shop is putting an emphasis on reading for kids in grades K-2. Of course our passion is STEAM, but this summer we see a need to include reading because Reading is FUNdamental for all subjects including STEAM! For kids K-2.

Now, want to let off STEAM with activities that are all hands-on and interactive! Register Now! "Bugs in Your Backyard!" That's arthropods and entomology, but don't "bug" out. Birds of a feather flock together in "Birds in Your Schoolyard." Campers get a bird's eye view of ornithology, the study of birds. There's lots more in the Mop Top STEAM Camps. Robotics, Rocketry, Geocaching, Digital & Clay Animation, Graphic Design/Arts, Rubberband Cars, Rocketry, Horticulture & Gardening, Moon Faces, Invention Convention, "A Tisket, A Tasket, Let's Use Math to Make a Basket," Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Video Game Design, Coding, Website Design, Graphic Arts, Boney Explorations (Forensic Anthropology), "Musical Hardware," using items purchased from a hardware store to make a play musical instruments (taught by a professional musical saw player). You can play in the Mop Top band at the End-of-Camp Finale!

In the Mop Top STEM, Music, and Arts Camps, kids design and build lava lamps, hovercrafts, volcanos, phenakistoscopes, pinhole cameras (camera obscura), bottle rockets, giant bubbles, solar ovens, remote-controlled cars and of course robots, using the Lego Mindstorm and EV3...just to name a few!

Using engineering, math, science, and technology, the Mop Top STEAM Campers design, build, and program robots using tooth brushes and graduate up to the Lego Mindstorm and EV3's. We have robots for campers (K-3rd and older).Also, there's Geocaching...

   Mop Top campers use hand-held GPS receivers to locate     satellites, plot their courses, and hunt for hidden     treasures...geocaching!

Let's not forget our other exciting hands-on learning activities; learn the basics of web page design and publishing to design and code websites; create basic animations and cartoons, illustrate with digitizing tablets, create artwork to silkscreen on t-shirts. But that's not all, campers build rocket and put together remote-controlled car. Learn Photoshop, Simulation & Game Design where kids learn basic programming to design and create their very own computer games. Let's not forget "Sew Cool!" Kids learn fashion design and sew a project to take home using digital machines. How about those bones in "Bad to the Bones!" Mop Top Campers explore the human skeleton and learn about all those bones! Oh! and let's not forget, Mop Top campers have to be prepared...they learn how to give effective presentations and hone their public speaking skills.

How about the professional photo editing application, Photoshop, a photo design and editing software application used by professionals; animation and Graphic Arts using a 3-D Printer. New this summer, look into our crystal and create a disco ball lamp to take home. There's so much fun at the Mop Top Shop!
At the End-of-Camp Finale Celebration, students present final projects that incorporate what they learn during the Mop Top Shop Summer Science & Technology Camp.

Skills & Technology Tools introduced during the sessions include but are not limited to:

  • geocaching and navigation and with hand-held GPS's
  • entrepreneurship, marketing, advertising and more
  • osteology and human anatomy

Objectives of the Mop Top Shop Summer Camp:

  • The mission of the Mop Top Shop Summer STEAM Camps is to expose and increase student awareness and enthusiasm for learning with science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematic using hands-on-learning activities.
  • Provide multi-sensory (hands-on and interactive) stimulation for learning through the use of technology and technology tools to address learning styles of all participants
  • Provide multicultural experiences and academic enrichment
  • Introduce and expose students to the contributions of scientists and inventors
  • Promote, build, and re-inforce self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Promote healthy eating, nutrition, and fitness for both mind and body

Students participate in discussions and receive one-on-one feedback as well as friendly and constructive critiques as they learn by sharing and evaluating work with instructors and fellow campers. Mop Top Campers should bring all of their wonderful ideas, artwork, photographs, creativity and imagination to our fun camps. At the End-of-Camp Finale, parents, families, and friends are invited to the Mop Top Shop Awards Presentation where campers showcase and share their final work...and don't forget the performance by professional musical saw player, Dwight Hawkins, who performed with the Grammy award-winning "Carolina Chocolate Drops" and some of our Mop Top Summer Campers, who participated in our final "Musical Hardware" summer camp sessions.

   Dwight Hawkins of "Dwight Hawkins & the Piedmont Highballers," better known as the "saw man," is a professional saw player, guitarist, mandolin player; plays the washtub bass, and "cow bones". This 'saw man" provides entertainment and amazes both campers and their families playing tunes on a "saw"...a real wooden saw, what a feat! He teaches a "Musical Hardware" session with tubs, bones, and saw during Mop Top Shop Summer Camps.

"A" is Anderson, Charles Anderson, a NC meteorologist; "B" is for Bannaker, Benjamin Bannaker, scientist, astronomer, surveyor, and mathematician; "C" is for Cralle, Alfred Cralle; he invented a non-sticky ice cream scoop..."J" is for Johnson, Lonnie Johnson, the inventer of the Super Soaker...all this and more. Makey Makey and the Invention Convention!'s a hint, let's use bananas, Play-Doh and other conductors to invent! We'll turn everyday objects into keyboards, touchpads, controllers, etc. Combined with the internet, you'll create and connect everyday objects to computer programs. 3rd-8th.

It's all about force and motion...push and pull! Lots of fun, hands-on activities to engage kids using balloons, balls, and more. Learn about motion, gravity, friction, mass, potential and kinetic energy and more. Is the sky really falling? Ask Sir Isaac Newton & "Henny Penny," and learn more about that big red apple! K-5th.

Getting Buggy With It! Bugs in Your Schoolyard!
We won't "bug" you with lots rhetoric! It's all hands-on. Using smartphones, notebooks, magnifying loupes/glasses, pooters, digitizing/drawing tablets, hand-held GPS units; campers collect, observe, photograph, and research, arthropods to share with scientists, entomologists, and naturalists all over the world.

Like to build with Legos...then you'll love building and programming your Legos pieces to make robots that really talk, walk, and more! Also, GPS (learn about satellites; hide, mark waypoints, and find hidden treasures) and GIS (learn about your community as you create digital maps).

Birds in Your Schoolyard...and Backyard!
Hey know birds of a feather flock together! lOur birdwatchers become expert bird ornithologist! Using binoculars, notebooks, tablets, digitizing/drawing tablets, Merlin Bird ID application; campers collect, observe, photograph, and research, birds in nature to share with scientists, orinthologists, and naturalists all over the world.

Graphic Design for the Real Word
Students learn the principles of great design. Emphasis, repetition, to design a corporate identity package; logosmagazine layout/cover, website. Consider Graphic Design as a career option. See what it's like to design a promotion from start to finish.

Musical Hardware...Let's Make Some Noise!
Washtub bass, musical saws, wooden bones...what do they all have in common? They can all be purchased at a hardware store to make beautiful music. In this fun, exciting, hands-on and interactive session, kids learn how to make and play, a washtub bass, musical saw, and cow and wooden bones. Classes taught by a professional musical saw player who has performed with the Grammy Award-Winning "Carolina Chocolate Drops," MerleFest, National Jug Band Jubilee and more. All participants perform at a Mop Top Shop End-of-Camp Finale!

HTML/Coding (Website Design)
Learn to code your very own website and more! You'll create a web page on your very first day of camp! That's right, learn to program, incorporate sound, video, and more during the session.

"Bad to the Bone"...Boney Explorations (Forensic Anthropology):
Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes? - An exploration of the human skeleton - Kids identify the different parts of the skeleton by name as well as where the bones are found. For example, kids will make casts of their hands and decorate them as well as make paper mache to build bones and skeletons.

"Little Horticulturist, Organic Gardening for Kids":
You are what you eat and learning to create a healthy garden is such a treat!
